Shabby love!

Good Afternoon, Lovelies!
Taking a quick moment to post something I did this weekend! Another item I saved from the trash! This is a neat old door! I have about 6 others like it but this one was unique in size. I think it was probably a smaller pantry door or closet door, it is about the same height as I am! For some reason I just liked it! This girl needed some spunk and I was feeling a little spunky!

I decided we were going to go with a little bit of color! Lately, I have been using all neutrals! I started off by painting the door white and adding a deep sea emerald!

My last and final coat was a bluish turquoise! You know turquoise is my favorite! Also, if you notice she has a really neat rusty knob! But, I wanted some bling in there. Awhile back, I got a bunch of knob sets from Habitat for $2 a piece! Awesome! She's now wearing her crystal! I went for the really shabby distressed look! Which, is my favorite but I usually don't do too often! I think she went from trash to treasure!!

Last but not least, the full shot of the door!! :)

Thanks, for visiting! I hope you have a great rest of the weekend! If you are not already a friend on
come on over and give us a visit!

Country Dresser Reborn!!

Hello, Friends!

One piece of furniture I worked on during the week was this outdated country dresser. Not, my style. I really didn't even want to deal with it! This was another item we found on the curb for free that we rescued!

I really just did not like it at all. For this piece I decided that I wanted to go with a cottage look. So, I sanded down the top and re-stained it with 1 part provencial and 1 part grey weathered stain.

I love the way the top turned out and was finally getting the personality I wanted into this dresser. I removed all the knobs and the hinges on the middle doors and started to paint. I started off with a white chalk paint and then added a second coat of a linen chalk paint. Anytime I paint, I always choose my knobs first and then decide my colors. I had to wait a bit to get the knobs ordered in but I am so glad that I did!  Here are all the after views!

Another piece saved from the trash! Now, I love it! I knew  there was hope in there some where! Let me know what you think? Do you follow us on Facebook? Come join us if you don't!

Have a great weekend and thank you for visiting,
~Valerie

Amanda & Jeff

Posted: by Audra

We’ve all seen them- the emotional military reunions. Spouses looking as though the
weight of the world is finally off their shoulders, the strong marine running to embrace
his family, and the children refusing to unwrap their little arms from around daddy’s
neck. One can’t help but be moved by the images; such a beautiful picture of a family
restored. However, these moments of reunion would not be possible without the moment
of saying “goodbye.” Staff Sergeant Jeff and Amanda have had their difficult moments
of goodbye and they’ve been blessed with some beautiful, memorable reunions.

Staff Sergeant Jeff left for a military deployment November 2011- just a couple weeks
before Thanksgiving. He left behind his wife (Amanda), daughter (6), son (4), and
daughter (10 months). Although this is not his first deployment, it is the first deployment
he left three kids behind. Once he arrived at his destination, he realized that the military
had not set up his housing correctly. He had to find his own place to stay for the 9 months
of training and pay for it out of pocket. Jeff and Amanda will not be reimbursed by the
military, so they had to not only pay their mortgage during his deployment, but also had
to pay for the apartment rental the whole time.

Marines understand sacrifice, and so do their families. During Staff Sergeant Jeff’s
deployment, he missed anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, father/daughter dances, and
many other memorable events. Amanda had to experience life as a single mom to three
energetic kiddos who missed their dad tremendously. Unfortunately, life doesn’t slow
down due to a deployment. During Jeff’s deployment Amanda’s van broke down beyond
repair and she had to deal with it and purchase one while Jeff was gone. She also
experienced shingles. Being sick with kids is hard enough, but having shingles, being
away from your husband, and having three kids running around must have been
excruciating. Amanda is not one to complain or ask for help. She is an unbelievably
humble, yet strong woman that has sacrificed so much so that her husband could protect
our freedoms. As we all go about our days, these strong and brave military wives are just
trying to get through each minute, hour and day (276 days to be exact…not that she was
counting). These women have made the biggest sacrifice that a Marine wife can make.
They have supported their husbands and have taken care of their homes, bills and
children, while their Marine has been deployed. Jeff just returned home this past week
and it is such an honor to show our respect and gratitude for such a deserving family. ~

Thank you, again for all of your entries! We will do more giveaways in the near future! I have been honored to share my birthday with you! ~Valerie

A Different Kind of Birthday Gift!!!

Hello, Friends!!

You all must know by now that I love BIRTHDAYS!

When Molly was little we started celebrating for the month instead of just the day! I kind of like the month partying! Josh kind of looks at me funny on that one! ;) But, that's ok!

My most favorite part of celebrating birthdays is giving gifts! I love to give! So, this year I am going to pay it forward! 2nd Essence... is transforming furniture from nothing into the spectacular. The pieces that get overlooked or that others might not think have potential, have a fresh start here. Well, I am a life that has been transformed and have been given so many chances that I haven't deserved. I would like to do something for one of you!

I have been blessed with a wonderful husband, Words can not express what he does for me and who he helps me to be! He does everything to help me accomplish my dreams from the very smallest to my hearts true desires! He is my best friend and my biggest encourager!

Then, there is my Molly. The girl I adore and could not live without. The girl who gets tons of cool furniture whenever she wants to change colors! But, really she is a sweetheart. She feels, loves, and cares deeply about everything! But, also marches to a very different drum just like her Mom! :)

My Father, who is now passed away, but instilled in me to never ever give up. I am most like him. Strong, stubborn, and always full of ideas! But, I wouldn't be German if I wasn't! ;)

I wouldn't be who I am today without any of these people. I cherish the gifts that they represent in my life!  They let me be me! I would like to give a gift with purpose! We all want beautiful furniture, but here's your chance to be blessed!

I would like to bless someone (or family) by painting a custom piece of furniture. You can enter yourself or nominate someone to be blessed. Winner *must* have a piece of furniture of their own that needs to be transformed. But, here's what I want to know... what does it mean to you?

Tell me your story and why you or your family would like to have something transformed! It can be encouraging, a heart felt story, a family in need, or something that has a history. You tell me!! :)

The only thing you have to do is drop it off and pick it up from me when finished. Whether you are local or maybe you live close enough to drive it in. We live just a little South of Kansas City, KS. I know that some of you live very far away. I am sorry that I cannot offer shipping. But, I am hoping I can make a difference and bless someone!

You will have the chance to pick your color of paint, finish, and style for your piece. Anything goes, *except* china cabinets/ hutches, roll top desks and dining room tables.  I cannot strip/ stain any piece for you. The item will be painted with chalk paint and can be glazed if so desired.

My actual birthday is this next Friday, August 31st. I will be 35. I am blessed to be alive and honored to share it with the ones I love!

You will have from now until 11:59 pm CST on Thursday, August 30th to enter your story. The winner will be chosen on my birthday! Josh, Molly, and myself will go through all of the entries as a family and pick the winner!! I will announce the winner on the blog and on FB at 7pm CST Friday, August 31st!

If you have a story to tell please leave a comment on this blog post only! Make sure you include a way for me to contact you. I would love to bless you!

Please include with your story what your item is that you would like transformed!

If you are not a follower on 2nd Essence Facebook I ask that you come join us! :)  If the chosen winner does not respond within 24 hrs another winner will be chosen.

Thank you, for letting me share and I can't wait to celebrate with you! :) Please feel free to share with others!
